The University of Alberta Department of History and Classics is offering it's first course to be taught entirely over the Internet during the Spring Term= , 6 May - 12 June 1996.

Course Description: The course will focus on Canada=92s prairie provinces, emphasising social, economic, and political issues=97in particular, immigration and settlement, natural resource development, reform movements, political protest, and regionalism.

Course Delivery: There are no classroom lectures. All lectures will be delivered over the Internet. Those qualifying to register at the U of A, including unclassified students, are eligible to take the course (there is no pre-requisite and students anywhere in the world may take the course). =20 Required Computer Skills: Students should have some basic knowledge of word processing, plus full access to the Internet. No additional special compute= r skills are necessary. While taking this history course, students will coincidentally learn about technologies relevant to the Internet (World Wid= e Web, e-mail, and a conferencing system called First Class) in a user-friendly environment. Others who do not presently have Internet connections should consult one of the many commercial providers available.

Marks: Students will be graded on class participation (using e-mail and First Class for discussion), a series of short written papers based on assigned readings, and exams. Students can participate in the class at any time of day or night. Assignments do not require additional library resources, although students may choose to undertake additional reading.
