Prizes and Awards

SHGAPE sponsors several prizes and awards, in order to encourage scholarship in the field and to recognize scholars whose contributions to the study of the GAPE, or whose service to SHGAPE, merits special attention.

  • The two prizes to be awarded in 2012 are the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era Article Prize and the Fishel-Calhoun Article Prize.

    The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) announces its biennial competition for the Fishel-Calhoun Prize for the best article dealing with any aspect of United States history between 1865 and 1917. The prize is open to new scholars, defined as graduate students or PhDs who received their doctorate since 2002 and who have not yet published a book. The article must have appeared in a journal dated 2010 or 2011. The winner of the prize will receive $250 and is asked to serve on the next Fishel-Calhoun Prize Committee. An article may be submitted for consideration by the author or by others (e.g., a journal editor). Deadline: December 15, 2011. The prize will be awarded at the SHGAPE luncheon at the OAH meeting, Milwaukee, April 19-22.

    Please submit three off-prints, photocopies, or a PDF of the article (page proofs are acceptable for articles scheduled to appear in December, 2011), a copy of the table of contents of the issue in which it appeared, and a current email address for the author.     SHGAPE Prizes and Awards

  • Vincent DeSantis Prize

    The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) announces the competition for the Vincent P. DeSantis Prize. The prize is awarded in odd-numbered years for the best book treating any aspect of United States history in the period 1865-1920 published during the two years preceding the year of the award. It must be the author's first book. The prize is given in honor of Vincent P. DeSantis, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Notre Dame, a distinguished historian of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.

    Books written in English and published in the two years before the selection year are eligible. Authors or their publishers should send a copy of each nominated book to all three members of the prize committee. A letter of nomination postmarked no later than October 1 is acceptable, as long as the book itself follows shortly thereafter. For books published between October 1 and December 31, 2010, final page proofs may be substituted, but in such cases, a bound copy of the book must be provided to each committee member. If a book was published during the eligible period but carries a different copyright date, include a letter of explanation with each copy mailed to the committee members. Please note that in order to be eligible, the nominated work must be an author's first book.

  • Best Article Prize: The Prize is awarded in even numbered years to the author of the best article published in The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era during the two years preceding the year of the award. The winner receives a certificate and an honorarium.
  • Distinguished Historian of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era: Selected by the immediate past President, the current President, and the President-Elect of the Society in odd-numbered years, the Distinguished Historian addresses the luncheon meeting of the Society held at the meeting of the Organization of American Historians. The Distinguished Historian receives a commemorative plaque or certificate and an honorarium.
  • Fishel-Calhoun Prize: The Prize ia awarded in every two years for the best article dealing with any aspect of United States history between 1865 and 1917.The prize is open to new scholars, defined as graduate students or new PhD's (within 6 years of receipt of the PhD) and who have not yet published a book. The winner of the prize will receive a certificate and honorarium and is asked to serve on the next Fishel-Calhoun Prize Committee.
  • Roger D. Bridges Distinguished Service Award: Awarded by the SHGAPE Executive Council at its discretion to no more than two members of the Society who have contributed especially valuable and distinguished service to the SHGAPE. The President shall announce the recipient(s) at the annual luncheon held during the annual meeting. The recipient(s) of the award shall receive a commemorative plaque or certificate
