AT THE VERY INCEPTION of H-SAE Susan Parman provided us with a list of classic articles on the anthropology of Europe and invited us to comment on it. Perhaps because it was long, and because H-SAE at that point didn't have a critical mass of subscribers, there were only a few comments forthcoming (which I have appended). I am reposting this thread, which I have entitled "Parman's Picks," to the H-SAE gopher hoping that it might prove useful to students, and that it might stimulate the kind of discussion Sue hoped for back in February of 1995. If you want to respond to the list she has offered, post your comments to H-SAE, and we can modify "Parman's Picks" such that it eventually evolves into "H-SAE's Picks." Also note that this list now contains only works in English. Suggestions for classic articles in other languages are encouraged.

From time to time, anthropologists talk about "classics" in the field. As part of the preparation for the session "American Perspectives in the History of the Anthropology of Europe" held in Atlanta last fall (1994), I circulated a list of articles that I suggested might be considered "classics" in the Anthropology of Europe. What is "classic," of course, depends on definition: "Classic" by virtue of having been around a long time (but now superseded and of interest only as an historical note)? "Classic" because it is inclusive, integrative, and generalizing in defining a "culture area" (e.g., the articles by Arensberg, Burns, Kenny, Halpern and Kideckel), research topic (e.g., gender, ethnicity, nationalism), or the subdiscipline itself (what is "the anthropology of Europe" or "the anthropology of the Mediterranean")? "Classic" because it raises important issues, arguments, and controversies about doing "the anthropology of Europe (e.g. Herzfeld/Galt/Pina-Cabral's discussion of doing "Mediterranean" ethnography/ethnology)? "Classic" because it provided an influential model for subsequent research?

As a result of these thoughts, I selected articles that seemed to me to illustrate the history, paradigmatic shifts, cultural context, and future of the anthropology of Europe. In going through the list in preparation to send it to you, I also added a variety of recent articles that might not meet the above specifications but that seemed to be interesting. I would be most appreciative if you could give me your reactions to this list (for example, "Why haven't you included X?" or "Dump Y," or "Z was a vitally important paper when it appeared because...."). I would also be most grateful if you could call my attention to any errors, or fill in some of the missing blanks.

Forgive my lack of modesty but could I add *Village on the Border* published by Cohen and West in 1957 and reissued with additions by Waveland in 1990 and *Communities in Britain* published in 1965 and reissued by Gregg Revivals in !994. there are also some papers on North and South wales and more recently Tuscany but I might not want to press their claims as classic (yet?) Ronnie Frankenberg's suggestion and Tony's reply do suggest expansion to include monographs. I think that would be an excellent idea and extremely useful to students. I think it would be especially important to include monographs (and articles) in languages other than English, whether these were in the "native" language or in some other non-English language, e.g. in French about Serbia. There are of course some published bibliographies on Europe that could also be included, and some that appear periodically (like Etudes Balkaniques).

Sue Parman reminds us of her stimulating list. Let' not let it get lost among the Vlachs.

O.K., what else should go on the list, including monographs?

Here's a start: Campbell's *Honour, Family, and Patronage*, classic as a pioneering work, classic for its ethnography on the kindred and patron client relationships, classic in just about other every way, including its nice blue buckram cover. I read it as an undergraduate in the 1960s and it convinced me that one could do "real" anthropology in Europe.

My reason for suggesting these constraints stems from my original reason for launching the list. It is not intended to be a closed set but an open-ended, investigative procedure. What do we as a community think about what's important in the field and why? My own reasons for constructing the list were highly eclectic: it included articles that were, at different times, often referred to; or that struck me as relatively generic; or I included some articles just to make sure that most regions were covered; and in some cases I added articles that I wanted reactions to, or thought I might get some reactions to (such as the set on culture areas). It is, in other words, a kitchen-sink list, with many uses and lots of holes.
