VOLCKER

endowMent passes

$70,000!!

Congratulations!  Raising $50,000 by 2003 for the Volcker Endowment for Public Service Research and Education may have seemed a big stretch for the Public Administration Section a mere 30 months ago.  But get this!  The Volcker Fund has now passed the $70,000 mark in pledges, donations, and interest earned.  Special thanks also go to the 50+ donors listed later in

this newsletter who have decided to help the PA Section to advance the research and professional development of younger scholars in our field for decades to come.  Assuming an average 5% rate of return on the pledges already made once they are fully funded, the Section will be able to award over $3,000 per year in seed money for research grants.  Well done!!!

WE NEED YOU!

With approximately 18 months left before the Centennial Campaign ends at the 2003 APSA meetings in Philadelphia, it's up to you how large the size of the Section's legacy to junior scholars will be.  To those of you who haven't gotten around yet to donating to the Volcker Fund, we hope that you will take a few minutes to review the following summary of "frequently asked questions" about the Volcker Endowment.  Then, we'd love to add your name (or your organization's name) to the Honor Roll of Donors in the next edition of the Volcker Update!!!

What is the purpose of the Volcker Endowment?  To promote and support excellence in research and theory on public administration issues affecting governance in the United States and abroad.

What will Volcker grants fund?  In order of priority, Volcker grants will be awarded for: (1) research and theory on significant public administration issues affecting the public service; (2) research-related professional development opportunities; and (3) professional development opportunities, more broadly defined.

Are there any conditions on using Volcker grants?  As a part of the Centennial Campaign, support from the Volcker Endowment can, but need not, involve research residencies at the Centennial Center in Washington.  Recipients may conduct research on issues affecting or relevant to public administration at any level of government, in any nation, and from whatever locale is most useful or appropriate for their research purposes.  Both research- and non-research-related professional development opportunities are similarly flexible.

Who may apply for Volcker grants?  All members of the APSA are eligible to apply for and receive Volcker grants.  Membership in the PA Section, while not mandatory, can be one of a variety of factors the Committee considers in making awards.

WANT TO MAKE A PERSONAL PLEDGE OR DONATION?

Additional information on the Volcker Endowment is available on the APSA website (apsanet.org).  For your convenience, we have included a pledge card at the end of this newsletter that you can download and mail directly to APSA (1527 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20036-1206).  If you wish, you also may contribute online by going to the APSA website and following the icons related to the Centennial Campaign.  This is a secure website.  Be sure to designate that your contribution is for the Volcker Endowment.  There is a menu of Centennial Campaign funds on the website, and you must select the Volcker Endowment from that menu.  Otherwise, your donation will go into the general Centennial Campaign and the PA Section will not get credit for the donation.  Also, be sure to check in PS to make sure that your donation has been properly credited to the Volcker Endowment.  If problems arise, contact Bob Durant.

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

Got a colleague, mentor, PA or political science program, or individual that means a lot to you?  Want to issue pledge challenges to friends and colleagues?  As you can see from the list of prior donors, several of our colleagues have made contributions to the Volcker Endowment in honor of others.  There also are group campaigns underway to honor several former John Gaus Award winners.  Care to do the same or get involved in this way?  Have any suggestions for persons, organizations, or corporate donors that we might contact?  Feel free to contact Bob Durant with ideas about pledge challenges, potential donor suggestions, or information about getting help and support from APSA in organizing efforts to honor individuals, programs, or universities.  In any event, spread the word among friends and colleagues.  Why not join with members of the PA Section's Executive Committee in calling or contacting friends during the year on behalf of the Volcker Endowment?  Thanks for your help!

WANT TO BECOME AN INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATE OF THE VOLCKER ENDOWMENT?

As the Michigan Public Management Institute's contribution exemplifies, the Volcker Fund offers public service institutes or their members an opportunity to leave a legacy for generations of scholars interested in improving research, practice, and theory building in public administration.  It also gives them an opportunity to leave a lasting tribute to Mr. Volcker for his exemplary contributions to enhancing and promoting the practice and image of public service in the United States when it was not popular to do so.  Interested in joining with the Michigan Public Management Institute as an institutional affiliate of the Volcker Endowment?  For information, please contact Bob Durant at 410-837-6090 or email rdurant@erols.com.

Text Box: Check each issue of PS: Political Science & Politics for new donors to the Volcker Fund.
Remember, all contributions are tax deductible!
