Dear Ms. DePauw,

I have read your book Baptism of Fire several times. Have you written a sequel to that book? If so, would you give me the title, etc. because I would love to read it. I was looking for your publisher and was happy to find your name so that I could ask you.

I would appreciate a reply if you have a few moments.

Thank you.

If you look at the inside back cover of Baptism of Fire you will see that I promised two things: to write a history of women in war and a sequel to the novel. I have finished the history entitled Battle Cries and Lullabies: A Brief History of Women in War from 6500 BC to the Present. Now I am working on the second novel. The title is Change of Life in which there are a variety of changes: HMS Lafayette's new captain is menopausal, Becky Petrie hits puberty, Captain Brook's ghost has difficulty leaving Lafayette, Anne Parker is struck by overwhelming passion for a new character -- Sebastian Whitefeather - who is all wrong for her for every possible reason, Tattoo contemplates her options for retirement for medical reasons, and Maggie Steele finds herself serving as first officer in a wardroom made up of classmates from Annapolis, all of whom are of the age for raging hormones, and must decide whether to take the oath of chastity when she reaches the age of twenty-one . Meanwhile, the Delphinians have a diabolical plan to use humans born in their POW camps to foment a political movement on Earth to trade the Colony for peace.

I love to hear from readers. Many, like you, say they have read the book several times. Would you tell me what you like? It helps me stay enthused.

Linda, since I am new to the list perhaps this has been discussed before, but I would like to hear about your novel. A private reply to e-mail, if you have time, would be okay.

Thanks,

I have mentioned Baptism of Fire, but it has not been a thread on the list. What would you like to know? If you have interesting questions,. post them for the list -- I love to talk about my fiction. I will be talking about it (as well as other things) at the Army Women's Professional Network meeting at the Pentagon on August 28.

Baptism of Fire was published in 1993. It is still in print and the MINERVA Center sells copies to support its non-profit mission. The cost is $14.95 plus $3 for shipping. EDITOR'S REPLY

Yes, indeed. The fiction writing is my own personal project right now and the relationship between military women's history and the archetype of the woman warrior is what I hope to focus on in my talk. Of course, I'll also bring everyone current about the other MINERVA Center activities for which I will bring order forms and flyers.
