Description: If researching in Havana, I highly recommend staying with Raysa Toledo and Orlando Fernandez-Adan. They live at c/17 1251, e/20 y 22, in Vedado. I've stayed with them on two occasions (for a total of 4 months) and have found their house quite hospitable for researching/writing. Their number (in Havana) is 830 3774; email fdezadan@infomed.sld.cu.

A good friend of mine, a former academic, has recently restored her
early 20th-century neo-classical townhouse and converted it into a
registered bed and breakfast. The rooms are perfectly clean, beautiful,
with bathroom inside, and all the wood furniture has been handmade by
Cuban artisans. It's very central, in the Vedado neighborhood and within
easy walking distance to the University of Havana, and the owner is
reliable and well-connected to the academic world. I have a jpg with
more info and some photos that I can send, but best to contact Alina
directly:

While in Cuba this summer, I met Mariam Gras, Ph.D. who rents rooms in her home, Calle 46 #3505 e/ 35 y 37, Municipio Playa, Ciudad Habana. Teléfono: 238409. She lost her position at the university because of her research on civil society in Cuba; she supports herself by renting rooms. People might like to know that I met her through an introduction from the US Interest Section.
