Cervantes, official organ of the Cervantes Society of America, publishes scholarly articles in English and Spanish on Cervantes' life and works, reviews and notes of interest to cervantistas. Twice yearly. Subscription to Cervantes is a part of membership in the Cervantes Society of America, which also publishes a Newsletter. $20.00 a year for individuals, $40.00 for institutions, $30.00 for couples, and $10.00 for students. Membership is open to all persons interested in Cervantes. 	Cervantes y Lope de Vega: Postrimerías de un duelo literario y una hipótesis

			This study examines Cervantes' subtle, ironic satire in Don Quijote Part II, aimed at three works of Lope de Vega: an auto, an entremés, and a play highly praised in Avellaneda's Don Quijote. Lope's entremés is satirized in the episode of Maese Pedro's "Retablo de Melisendra" (II, 26), in which the narrating trujamán is actually Cervantes' mouthpiece. My hypothesis is that three authors fathered the apocryphal Quijote printed in the Barcelona printing shop that Don Quijote and Sancho visited (II, 63). The puppet show reveals their identity by allusion and symbolic metaphor. They were Jerónimo de Pasamonte, Lope de Vega, and the man who paid for the edition: either the Conde de Lemos, or the publisher Sebastián de Cormellas himself.

	Cervantes as Narrator of Don Quijote

			Es una premisa casi unánimemente aceptada en la teoría literaria contemporánea que un autor histórico no puede aparecer de manera alguna en un texto ficticio. Esta actitud ejemplifica, a veces, lo que Bajtín ha llamado “teoreticismo”: el confiar más en una bella teoría que en una realidad pragmática. En este ensayo se propone lo contrario: Miguel de Cervantes es el narrador de Don Quijote. Se critica especialmente la actitud binaria: algo puede ser o verdad o ficción (o autor histórico o personaje) pero no algo entre ambas cosas, ni una combinación de ellas.

	Cipión, Berganza, and the Aesopic Tradition

			El nombre del antiguo fabulista Esopo se menciona una vez en “El coloquio de los perros,” y otra vez en su marco, “El casamiento engañoso.” Además, el “Coloquio” pone en escena a dos perros que hablan, recordando así el rasgo fundamental de las fábulas esópicas: animales que razonan como seres humanos. Todo esto sugiere una estrecha relación entre el “Coloquio” y estas fábulas. Se propone una fuente esópica del “Coloquio” hasta ahora inadvertida: la Vida de Esopo, una biografía novelada que gozó de gran popularidad en la España de la época de Cervantes. Se estudian las relaciones temáticas que hay entre las fábulas esópicas y el “Coloquio,” una de las cuales es la transgresión de la identidad.

	Jongleuresque Dialogue, Radical Theaticality, and Maese Pedro's Puppet Show

			Mediante un análisis del espectáculo juglaresco —cuya esencia teatral consta de un “diálogo” entre actor y espectador— este ensayo examina la manera en que las varias tradiciones juglarescas, picarescas y carnavalescas convergen en el episodio del retablo de maese Pedro. Cervantes construye un microcosmo del teatro de su época, con la participación de cuentistas, juglares, saltimbanquis, prestidigitadores, animales, cantantes y titiriteros. Esta meditación sobre la historia teatral española culmina con la “juglarización” del propio Quijote. El narrador, en un momento crucial, se dirige directamente a su público y plantea la posibilidad de que su narración, en un futuro, pueda leerse en voz alta.
