    Notes:

This essay is a consideration of historiographical issues in the "Dawnbreakers" or chronicle of Nabil Zarandi, and contains valuable observations on the manuscript, which is rare and unpublished. The essay demonstrates one important mindset among Iranian Baha'i historians of the Pahlevi era, which tended to privilege Zarandi's account over other histories, including over other histories from eyewitnesses who were closer in time and experience to the events recounted. It was this insistence on the primacy of Nabil that in large part led to the suppression of Fadil Mazandarani's History of the Manifestation of Truth (Tarikh-i Zuhur al-Haqq] by the Iranian national spiritual assembly in the 1940s, in which `Ali Akbar Furutan played a central role. Mazandarani's account draws on a variety of primary sources and is not afraid to contradict Nabil. A stream of thought in Iranian Baha'i historiography more critical of Nabil appears to be especially associated with the Afnan family, which has its own cache of primary documents and which often finds Nabil sloppy or tendentious.
