The Computer Resource Manager (CRM) for Social Sciences
Computing defines, coordinates, and directs the technical
operations for the Social Sciences Computing Facility (SSCF)
and its related networks. These consist of a heterogeneous
assemblage of UNIX workstations, PCs, and Macintoshes
running several networking protocols and applications
ranging from simple to complex. The CRM is the primary
technical expert on computing and analytical support
issues for the departments and programs within the Division
of Social Sciences. The CRM implements and administers the
Social Sciences network and related systems, provides
analytical and statistical consulting, and directs computer
support services to the departments and programs within
the Division of Social Sciences. The CRM works in collaboration
with the SSCF Manager in meeting the goals and objectives of the
Facility in particular and of the Division of Social
Sciences more generally.

Requirements: Experience developing and managing a complex
computing facility consisting of a heterogeneous network
of UNIX workstations, Macintoshes, and PCs. Experience
managing a technical support staff, including staff hiring,
training, supervision, work scheduling, and budget planning.
Applicants must have a solid understanding of computing
techniques relevant to instruction and research in the social
sciences, including an advanced degree relevant to the
position, with graduate level training in computer assisted
quantitative methodologies. Applicants must have a working
knowledge of LAN's, client-server operations, CWIS,
multi-media technologies, and associated hardware and software
products and vendors. Excellent communication skills and
demonstrated ability to provide technical support and leadership
to a diverse user group, both directly and in a supervisory
role. Must be capable of functioning as an independent and
creative thinker in order to solve critical technical problems
as they arise.

Conflict Studies Resource

The University of Ulster in partnership with The Queen's University of
Belfast and the Linen Hall Library is to develop a Conflict Studies
Resource. This project aims to develop, using
Northern Ireland as a case study, a collaborative multi-media database of
resources relevant to teaching and research in conflict studies.

1 RESEARCH OFFICER (Ref: C95/300/C)

This person will be responsible for the overall operational management of
the project, the intellectual organisation of the database, directing
liason with academics and researchers and
other potential information providers and producing appropriate reports.
The person appointed should have a first or second class honours degree
in a computing, social science or library or
information studies discipline and at least two years research experience.

The post is available for a two year period.
Salary in the range 14,317 - 19,848

2 RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (Ref: C95/301/C) (Ref: C95/302/C)

These staff will be concerned with identification of relevant resources and
their subsequent mounting on the server. One will have a first or second
class honours degree or higher degree in a computing discipline and will
be responsible for maintaining the central server and its software.
This person will also be involved in other technical tasks required to meet
the objectives of the project, including the development of CGI scripts
to enable form-fill style interfaces and the writing of programs to
assist with data conversion from other systems. The other Research
Assistant will have a first or second class degree in a computing, social
science or library discipline but will also need knowledge and experience
in PC based applications.

These posts are also available for two years.
The salary range for the posts is 14,317 - 15,986

It is envisaged that the Research Officer and one Research Assistant will
be based on the Magee Campus in Londonderry, while the other Research
Assistant will be based at the Jordanstown campus. However, all posts
will involve considerable travel within Northern Ireland.
