John Leland's "suburbe"

When was the word "suburb" first used? I've noticed it repeatedly mentioned
in the writings of John Leland. Would it have been interpreted much
differently then as now?

"Ther was also a suburbe beyonde the north gate, and streachid toward Burton
village ... a suburbe also without the Barre gate, ... streachid toward a
village caullid Brasebridg (Bracebridge)"
