The best recent work is James Horn, Adapting to a New World: English
Society in the Seventeenth Century Chesapeake (Chapel Hill, 1994).
For an economic analysis see David Galenson, White Servitude in Colonial
America (Cambridge, 1981). The classic is Abbot Emerson Smith, Colonists
in Bondage (Chapel Hill, 1947/ New York, 1971).
