I have had a great deal of success with Tobias Smollet's _Humphrey
Clinker_ in an 18th century Britain section. I used it to explore the
complexities of class, the conflict between traditional and modern
Britain, and Wales versus England versus Scotland issues since the
characters travel to all three places. There is also a character who
explored the wilderness of North America which brings in British
perceptions of their colonies. The students loved it since the novel
includes a great deal of very earthy humor and has both good female and
male characters not to mention the necessary happy ending complete with
multiple weddings.
