Lisa Bitel's 1990 book, _Isle of the Saints_ is an excellent start, with a
solid bibliography. Your student may also want to look at Fergus Kelly's book
_A Guide to Early Irish Law_ (Dublin, 1988) and a few essays in _Pastoral Care
Before the Parish_ edited by John Blair and Richard Sharpe (Leicester, 1992)
may be of use.
I hope that greater experts than I have responded with suggestions.
