Last spring several people asked for info regarding a documentary
film entitled "IN DARKEST HOLLYWOOD: CINEMA AND APARTHEID." At the time I
did not have the info at hand and then went off-line over the summer. Now
that the autumn term has begun, I hope that it is not too late for the the
following:
*IN DARKEST HOLLYWOOD*, by Peter Davis, is distributed by
Villon Films
77 West 28th Avenue
Vancouver, British Columbia
Canada V5Y 2K7
phone/fax: 604-879-6042
The film offers a good deal of cinema history related to South
Africa, including clips from scores of films and interviews with directors,
actors, writers, producers, and cultural historians. In the process, Davis
executes an institutional critique of the the film industries in Hollywood
and in South Africa. I have used the films with my students with good
results.
Davis also recently (18 months ago?) released a documentary
entitled *SIDE BY SIDE: WOMEN AGAINST AIDS IN ZIMBABWE*, also distributed
by Villon, which I have not seen.
