THE SOUTH AFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC HISTORY

The South African Journal of Economic History was established in 1986
when the Economic History Society of Southern Africa's journal,
Perspectives in Economic History, was renamed. The society itself
was formed in July 1980 "to promote the study of and interest in
economic and social history".

The journal is published twice a year. Recent topics covered include:

* The development of the South African iron and steel industry 1934-45
* Reform of the labour market in South Africa
* Productivity in an imperial bank in the age of high imperialism: The
case of the Standard Bank of South Africa 1882-1900
* Managing South Africa's environmental pollution
* A historical perspective on the changing role of the International
Monetary Fund
* The Glen Grey Act: Forgotten dimensions in an old theme
* Wage regulations for African workers 1918-48
* The application of the theory of "economic backwardness" to South Africa
1881-1924
* "Working in the grave": Mining accidents on the Witwatersrand gold mines
c1900-40
* Foreign and local investment in the South African motor industry 1924-92
* Sugar and gold in the making of the South African labour system: The
crisis of supply on the Zululand sugar estates 1906-39

SPECIAL ISSUES
A recent innovation is a series of special issues devoted to a specific topic.

The South African economy in the 1980s [Vol 9(2) 1994]

Back issues are available except for Vol
1(1), September 1986, and Vol 2(1), March 1987, which are out of
print. A list of articles published from 1986 to 1995 is available on
request.
