PART-TIME TEACHING POSITION (One 3-credit course): POLITICS, ADVERTISING, AND MASS MEDIA – Fall 2004 AT THE CORCORAN COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN The Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington DC, the only accredited BFA-granting art school in the nation’s capital, seeks an adjunct instructor Fall semester 2004 for the interdisciplinary undergraduate course: AS438 Politics, Advertising, and Mass Media: Strategies of Representation in Advertising & Politics In contemporary mass media, political ideas and candidates are sold in the same way as commercial products. This course highlights study of the electoral campaigns of 2004 within the larger context of visual culture, political rhetoric, general and historical theories of argument and persuasion, and the practical considerations of how government, civil society, and consumer culture operate through mass representations. In keeping with the aims of traditional rhetoric, we explore means of guarding against invalid arguments that are convincingly presented, as well as making a better case for your own views. Students in this seminar should expect to deepen their understanding of the use of images and discourse to influence opinion and motivate choice in our time. Scheduled: Tues 7:00-10:00 pm 9/7/04-12/14/04 This is a great opportunity for a scholar-teacher interested in the power of social, political and historical knowledge to inform and affect a new generation of artists and designers. The Corcoran features small classes, a diverse international body of talented students, and a warm, supportive style among teaching peers. We encourage active and innovative learning methods and use of Washington’s unique resources, including group exercises and site visits. No previous college-level work in communications or political science should be assumed among students. Stipend is competitive with local colleges.
