The Italian Captivity: War Prisons and Prisoners in Italy (1939-47): Special issue of ‘Dimensioni e Problemi della Ricerca Storica’ (I/2014)

For decades the history of prisoners of war in Italy during World War II was neglected. Until the end of the Cold War historians focused on a very restricted number of topics related to racial persecutions and to the history of Resistance. In the last two decades historians have started to analyze and discuss forgotten stories (for example, the story of the German prisoners in Anglo-American Camps on the Italian soil).
Dimensioni e Problemi della Ricerca Storica is a peer reviewed scholarly journal published twice a year by the Department of History, Culture and Religions of the Sapienza Università di Roma. The 1/2014 issue will focus on the story of captivity in Italy from the beginning of the war in 1939 up to the dismantlement of the camps for German and Fascist prisoners. Themes to be addressed include, but are not limited to:
1. Individuals and groups who experienced captivity in Italy during and after WWII: (British and American soldiers in German-Italian hands, political prisoners, Jewish and victims of racial persecution, German POWs, Fascist and Nazi prisoners in Allied hands);
2. Policies for the management of camps and prisoners;
3. The Italian experience in comparative perspective;
4. Public/private memories of captivity.
We are keen to receive proposals from established scholars as well as researchers at the beginning of their career.
The texts will be published in Italian and in English. Papers should not exceed 50,000 characters (including citations and footnotes), spaces included. Applicants should send a brief abstract (no more than 300 words) and a short biographical note to Dr. Federico Niglia and Prof. Anna Maria Isastia at dprs.2014@gmail.com by 25th July, 2012.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 20 September 2012. Successful applicants will be expected to email their papers by June 2013. The publication is expected for January 2014.
