The Department of History at Bilkent University is pleased to provide information about its M.A. program in United States History. The program, established in 1993, emphasizes four subfields spanning the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to taking the U.S. history survey and historiography courses, graduate students may anticipate a strong grounding in U.S. political, cultural, social, and diplomatic history. The program requires two years of coursework, and then development, research, and ultimately defense of a thesis. All students normally receive tuition waivers, housing, and a monthly stipend.
The Bilkent history department, with faculty from Turkey, the United States, and Europe, currently trains some 70 graduate students. Besides U.S. history, it also offers opportunities in Ottoman and European history.
Outside its history program, Bilkent has various resources useful to U.S. graduate students. The departments of political science, international relations, American culture and literature, and foreign languages offer relevant courses and faculty resources. The Bilkent library is the best research library in Turkey, with extensive holdings in secondary sources, databases, and various microfilm series.
Bilkent University, founded in 1984, is an elite institution just outside Ankara. It currently educates over 10,000 students from some 72 countries. According to ISI Citation Indexes, the University continues to be first in Turkey in number of published papers per faculty member and ranks high internationally.
The deadline for applications for the autumn of 2008 is 1 June 2008. For further information please visit the Bilkent history department’s website at http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/~history/ .
