Survey of Environmental History Programs

Environmental History is a young field with a small, but growing, institutional presence. On this page we have identified those institutions that offer degrees or a coordinated curriculum at undergraduate or graduate levels in Environmental History. Many departments and faculties employ environmental historians although most schools do not yet offer specialized programs in Environmental History. If you know of an Environmental History program that is not included here please contact the web editor.

PhD and MA, Environmental History concentration
Arizona State University

At least eight members of the ASU History Department faculty and eight of our Ph.D. students are engaged in environmental history research and teaching (see brief descriptions below). Our work crosses many different geographic regions of the world. We utilize insights and methods from other disciplines, including historical geography, sociology, law, ecology, and literary criticism.


PhD and MA, Major Field in Environmental History
Montana State University, Bozeman

Inspired by their Rocky Mountain surroundings, the faculty of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at MSU provide an innovative curriculum that focuses on the environmental history of the United States, Europe, and East Asia. The program specializes in topics situated at the intersection of environmental history and the history of science and technology.


PhD, joint MS/PhD, other degree programs Environmental Science, Policy & Management
University of California - Berkeley

The Environmental Science, Policy, and Management department integrates the biological, physical, and social sciences to provide advanced education in these fields. We develop critical analytical skills and the ability to conduct ecosystems research at molecular, organismal, and global scales and within interlinked human social systems.


PhD and MA
University of California - Davis

Historians of the United States at UC Davis cover a wide range of topics but have special strengths in environmental, Western, and political history, the history of race and ethnicity, and the comparison of US history with that of other nations.


Master of Research (MRes) in Environmental History
University of Dundee jointly with the University of Stirling, UK

Provides interdisciplinary training in Principles and Methods of Environmental History, the Rural Environment, the Changing Urban Environment, and the Maritime Environment.


MSc programme in Environment, Landscape and History
University of Edinburgh, School of History, Classics and Archaeology

This Masters course provides a historical perspective to contemporary environmental issues. The MSc course explores the history, archaeology and ecology of landscapes, using Scottish examples set in national and international contexts. It also illuminates how space and resources have changed over time, and does so in both rural and urban settings.

University of Houston

In addition to the master's and doctoral degrees in U.S., European, and Latin American history, the department also offers a master's degree in public history.


Graduate Field in Environmental History
University of Kansas, USA

Graduate studies (MA and PhD) drawing on course offerings and faculty expertise in American and World environmental histories, agriculture, science and technology, and disease.


The History of the U.S. West PhD Program
University of Nevada-Las Vegas, USA

This program in the History of the US West offers environmental history as one of its specialties through courses and faculty expertise.


MA in Environmental History
University of Nottingham, UK

1 year full-time course of study in subjects ranging from British, American, and World Environmental histories to landscape history, historical geography, and ecology and nature conservation. The University also offers an MSc in Environmental History.


Western, Native American, and Environmental History
University of Oklahoma, USA

Graduate studies focused on Western, Native American, and Environmental histories with faculty and research strengths, lectures series and fellowships.


Institute for Environmental History
University of St Andrews, UK

Includes undergraduate honours courses and postgraduate degrees (MLitt, MPhil, PhD) in Environmental History with interdisciplinary and interdepartmental courses, involving the Schools of History, Geography and Geosciences, Economics and International Relations.


Graduate Program in History of Environment and Technology (CHET)
University of Virginia, USA

The University of Virginia Department of History offers a Ph.D. field in the history of science, technology, and the environment.

University of Washington

The History Department is embracing a more interdisciplinary and comparative approach to historical studies and has strong ties to many other units including the Jackson School of International Studies, American Indian Studies, American Ethnic Studies, Women Studies, Philosophy, Astronomy, Classics, English, Near Eastern Languages and Civilization, Program on the Environment.


Graduate Study in Environmental History
Center for Culture, History, and Environment
University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA

A program of graduate study which coordinates faculty, courses, and biweekly colloquia. Includes professors and graduate students from the humanities, social, and natural sciences.


Center for Environmental History (ZUG)
Vienna, Austria

ZUG coordinates an environmental history curriculum with a multi-disciplinary courses at several Viennese Universities over six semesters.
